1. Journey to Ethical Competence in Clinical Neuropsychology

Shane Bush, PhD, ABPP

Ethical competence is one of multiple competencies that enable neuropsychologists to provide effective services. Ethical competence both requires and helps establish professional competence, allowing neuropsychologists to provide services that are informative and beneficial to patients and a variety of referral sources and other consumers of neuropsychological services. Achieving and maintaining an awareness of common ethical challenges and an understanding of ethics resources allows neuropsychologists to pursue high standards of practice, minimize the potential for ethical conflicts, and appropriately resolve ethical challenges when they occur. Yet, for an evolving specialty that exists in a context of rapid technological advancement and increasing diversity, the ability to determine what constitutes best ethical practices can be challenging. The purpose of this keynote address is to review ethical issues associated with a select subset of practice activities and settings. The presentation will begin with a brief review of my professional development which led to me giving this address. Next will be a very brief review of key ethical challenges associated with a sample of practice activities and contexts. The primary focus of the presentation will involve a review of the ethical issues associated with (1) the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in neuropsychology and (2) neuropsychological practice around the globe. Awareness of, and reliance on, ethical decision-making resources will be emphasized. The APA Ethics Code, which is a primary resource, is currently in the final stages of a major revision, and it is expected that the new Code will be published in early 2026. The presentation will conclude with a discussion of changes to the Code with which neuropsychologists should be familiar.
