Brief Program Description

The Washington DC VAMC neuropsychology fellowship espouses the scientist-practitioner model consistent with Houston Conference Guidelines (Hannay, Bieliauskas, Crosson, Hammeke, Hamsher, & Koffler, 1998). Throughout the course of the two-year training program, the fellow will be provided with opportunities and training to develop a strong foundation of knowledge and skills pertinent to advanced clinical practice in neuropsychology. Fellows complete a two-year rotation in Neuropsychology (housed within the Mental Health Service Line), a one-year rotation in Neuropsychological Intervention/Cognitive Rehabilitation (with optional second year), and a one-year rotation in Polytrauma Neuropsychology. Fellows will also have an optional one-year intervention experience in Geropsychology. Fellows may participate in other clinical opportunities as they arise (e.g., multidisciplinary MS Clinic through the MS Center of Excellence-East, multidisciplinary ALS clinic). In addition, ten to twenty percent (10-20%) of the fellow’s time will be devoted to research. Our training program provides rich didactic opportunities with a weekly local neuropsychology seminar, participation in the Neuropsychology Distance Learning (NDL) seminar, neurology and psychiatry grand rounds, brain cutting conferences, and Cognitive Rehabilitation TeleECHO. There are also multiple opportunities for collaboration with faculty across disciplines and departments.
