Brief Program Description

The James A. Haley Veterans’ Hospital (JAHVH) is one of the flagship medical centers in the VA system, with over 111,000 unique patients served each year across 5 counties in the Tampa Bay area. Our facility offers specialized treatment programs for TBI/polytrauma, SCI, and ALS/MS and hosts over 1,500 health professions trainees during any given year. We have a large mental health service with over 130 psychologists on staff, and our psychology training programs boast 22 paid positions across our 4 internship and postdoctoral residency programs. The Tampa Bay area is a rapidly growing metropolitan region known for world-class beaches, temperate Florida living, myriad recreational options, and a thriving restaurant scene, several of which were recently awarded coveted Michelin stars.

Our longstanding neuropsychology training programs include a specialty-track internship and an APPCN- member postdoctoral program. Both programs are APA-accredited and follow Houston conference guidelines, and both recruit for 2 positions each year. We are a growing service with 14 current neuropsychology faculty, many of whom hold positions in local and national professional organizations. Our program graduates typically move on to competitive postdoc and clinical/academic job opportunities.

The internship program comprises 6 months of dedicated neuropsychology training with two required rotations in general outpatient/memory disorders and neurorehabilitation. The remaining 6 months are comprised of elective rotations from our 16 available training rotations across a comprehensive array of settings, as well as core psychotherapy and general assessment experiences. This specialty track program offers weekly neuroanatomy and neuropsychological assessment seminars in addition to the core psychological assessment and psychotherapy seminars required for all interns. Applications for our internship are due November 1 of each year.

The postdoctoral residency has a strong reputation for training in neurorehabilitation, differential diagnosis of complex syndromes, brain injury research, and a commitment to graduating world-class neuropsychology professionals. The 2-year specialty program includes four 6-month rotations across both outpatient and inpatient rehabilitation settings. We also offer multiple professional development training opportunities and a weekly postdoc seminar series focused on board preparation, presentations on a full compliment of foundational neuropathological syndromes, and advanced assessment techniques. Applications for our postdoc program are due December 15 of each year and are accepted via the APPA CAS portal (through APPIC).

We appreciate your interest in our neuropsychology training programs and welcome you to apply. If you have any questions please feel free to reach out to Dr. Vassallo (internship) or Dr. Kamper (postdoc). We look forward to hearing from you!
