Please provide a paragraph describing an example of your commitment to service.

I am an international student from India and a 3rd year Clinical Health Psychology PhD student at Ferkauf Graduate School of Psychology, Yeshiva University. I am committed to service through initiatives that especially support diverse and underserved populations. For instance, I currently facilitate the International Students Affinity Group at Ferkauf, aiming to foster a sense of belonging and address unique challenges faced by international students. This group provides a platform for sharing resources, building community, and advocating for systemic changes, such as promoting STEM designation for the Clinical Health Psychology program to benefit international graduates. I hope to do more in this field and that my efforts reflect my dedication to creating inclusive environments and advocating for equitable opportunities in academic and professional settings.

Please provide a paragraph describing an example of your ability to persevere or achieve despite barriers.

Navigating a new academic system, adapting to cultural differences, and managing the complexities of maintaining a visa while pursuing my degree has been challenging. However, I have remained focused on my academic and professional goals, balancing these responsibilities as well as one can. For example, working with older adult populations and administering neuropsychological tests in an accent that this group has not been exposed to has presented unique challenges, including the need to address biases and clarify certain pronunciations. Maintaining a calm and professional demeanor has been crucial to building rapport and ensuring standard administration protocol. I have been grateful for the support and understanding of my research and clinical mentors, who have guided and supported me through these experiences.

Additionally, my motivation to facilitate the International Student Affinity Group at Ferkauf stemmed from my own struggles as a PhD student feeling isolated when I had visa-related questions. My goal was to ensure that new international students do not face the same challenges and instead have a welcoming, supportive community they can rely on. Balancing my studies, research, and leadership responsibilities has required persistence and resilience, but these experiences have strengthened my ability to overcome obstacles and remain committed to personal and professional growth.

Please provide a paragraph discussing the potential benefits of your conference attendance to you and the professional community.
Attending this conference will undoubtedly provide invaluable opportunities for professional development and networking within the field of neuropsychology. I am gaining an interest in the validity and psychometric properties of neuropsychological assessments, particularly in how norms can be made universally applicable. This conference will enable me to engage with experts and deepen my understanding of strategies to achieve more inclusive and representative norming.
Moreover, I have observed that discussions about supporting minority populations often lack representation from the very individuals they aim to serve. This underrepresentation stems not from a lack of diverse professionals in neuropsychology but from systemic barriers that limit their access and opportunities. Receiving this scholarship would not only provide me with exposure and the chance to connect with like-minded professionals but also better prepare me to mentor and advocate for my community members, fostering greater inclusivity and representation within the field.
