In 500 words or fewer, please describe (1) your prior mentorship experience and what you feel you can offer mentees from historically underrepresented backgrounds at the AACN annual meeting, and (2) how this mentorship experience will contribute to your professional goals. You also may describe the ways in which attending the AACN Annual Meeting would represent a financial hardship for you without this award. | My primary mentorship experience has come from serving as president of my school's Association of Neuropsychology Students in Training (ANST) club. In this role, I’ve supported fellow graduate students interested in neuropsychology by connecting them with valuable resources like research opportunities, offered advice on important courses to take, and created spaces where they felt supported and encouraged. This role also allowed me to foster a sense of community among students. These experiences have shown me how impactful mentorship can be, and I’m committed to furthering these efforts at the 2025 AACN Conference. If provided the opportunity, I would offer mentees my insights as someone who has faced similar academic and professional challenges and understands the importance of representation in neuropsychology as an African American woman. This mentorship opportunity directly aligns with my professional goals. I aspire to be a neuropsychologist who advocates for the inclusion of diverse providers. I would aim to create a supportive environment where mentees feel heard and empowered. By sharing my own experiences, I hope to encourage them to view their backgrounds as strengths that add unique value to their growing professional identities. Mentoring students from historically underrepresented backgrounds contribute to my long-term professional goals by helping me develop as a leader and advocate within neuropsychology. Mentoring students from similar backgrounds strengthens my empathy, communication, and leadership skills, which are qualities I want to bring to my work with patients and colleagues. Additionally, I would support them in exploring academic and professional opportunities, networking opportunities, and strategies for succeeding in graduate school based on my experiences and insights gained as ANST president. Attending the conference would be an invaluable experience, but it would also be a financial hardship. As a graduate student, my budget is limited. This award would ease that financial burden, allowing me to focus on learning valuable knowledge and connecting with professionals and students. |
