Please provide a paragraph describing an example of your commitment to service. | I have demonstrated a commitment to service in neuropsychology and psychology at large through various positions over the last few years. Currently, I serve as a mentor for a post-baccalaureate student through the Society for Black Neuropsychology and as the student representative on a multi-year taskforce in partnership with CUDCP focusing on redressing non-representativeness across the entire psychology training to workforce pipeline. Locally, during previous years I have served as the student representative for the clinical psychology doctoral program as well as the co-chair of the ANST student group at the University of North Texas. Additionally, I am the co-founder of my university’s student circle chapter of The Association of Black Psychologists’ where I served as President for 2 years. Perhaps most relevantly, I also served as assistant to the Director of Clinical Training for several years, during which time I was responsible for organizing the program’s interview day for three admission cycles. My duties included creating schedules for applicants, current students, and faculty as well as coordinating travel and lodging arrangements. I plan to continue contributing to the field of neuropsychology through professional service for the remainder of my training and throughout my career. |
Please provide a paragraph describing an example of your ability to persevere or achieve despite barriers. | My path to and through graduate school highlights my determination and ability to succeed despite obstacles. While my initial college experience was at a small community college with limited resources—only one doctoral-level psychologist and no research labs—I actively sought mentorship and gained key experiences (independent research project, study group for the psychology GRE) which led to my acceptance into graduate school. In my first year, I realized that my doctoral program lacked the opportunities necessary for adequate training in neuropsychology. Rather than letting that discourage me, I proactively pursued relevant didactic opportunities, including courses at a nearby university, the NAN neuroanatomy course, and KnowNeuropsychology webinars, while also securing clinical practicum placements with board-certified neuropsychologists at a local hospital. More recently, after failing to match to a clinical internship, I used the experience as an opportunity to focus on research, study for the EPPP, and expand my clinical practicum experiences. As I enter this match season, I remain hopeful and optimistic. Earning a doctorate in clinical psychology is challenging under any circumstances, but doing so while raising a young child and navigating dual pandemics has truly tested and proven my perseverance. |
Please provide a paragraph discussing the potential benefits of your conference attendance to you and the professional community. | Attending this conference will expand my exposure to national neuropsychology events and offer a valuable opportunity to network with others in the field. I am excited to connect with neuropsychologists, fellow trainees, and other professionals, and the conference will be an ideal setting for this. Furthermore, I have an interest in mentoring students at earlier stages of their training, and this event will provide a chance to engage with them and share insights. Lastly, the conference will allow me to discuss upcoming research, explore potential collaborations, participate in workshops, and take part in activities that will further my professional growth. |
