Please provide a paragraph describing an example of your commitment to service.

As a student trainee in the field of psychology and neuropsychology, I am always looking for opportunities to learn and grow. I am currently a member of the Clinical Psychology Mentorship Program at my graduate school, where I provide information and advice to first year doctoral students. I am also a part of various mentorship programs, including with my undergraduate program, my pre-doctoral internship, and informally, with students who are interested in learning more about neuropsychology. With neuropsychology being such a niche field, I find so much value in providing fellow students with my experiences and learnings. I’ve served on various panels (e.g., dissertation panel, PsyD program interview panel, and internship interview panel, that I don't ever picture a life where I am not committed to serving others.

Please provide a paragraph describing an example of your ability to persevere or achieve despite barriers.

The complexities and barriers that come with being a college student athlete are indescribable. Balancing school and sport was one thing, but moving away from home for the first time, rehabilitating serious injuries in hopes to get back on the field soon, in fear of losing your scholarship due to not performing well at practice that day, all while being told by your coach that mental health doesn’t matter, was in short, a challenge. However, these barriers taught me incredible skills such as time management, perseverance, grit, and the importance of pursuing goals, even when things get hard. I knew from that moment how important mental health was- and that my “purpose” was to dedicate myself to a career in just that. Coming from a foundation of the grit that’s involved with participating in college athletics, I have the skills and determination to take each barrier as it comes.

Please provide a paragraph discussing the potential benefits of your conference attendance to you and the professional community.

As a pre-doctoral intern at a private practice specializing in neuropsychology services, the conference would contribute to my learnings as a trainee and future neuropsychologist. I love to learn and network with those in a similar field, especially one as niche as neuropsychology. The learnings I would take from the conference would better prepare me for licensure and board certification. Staying up to date with the research is important and I’d hope to provide my community with the latest advances in neuropsychology, especially in regards to the aging community.

Application for Conference Mentor Award
In 500 words or fewer, please describe (1) your prior mentorship experience and what you feel you can offer mentees from historically underrepresented backgrounds at the AACN annual meeting, and (2) how this mentorship experience will contribute to your professional goals. You also may describe the ways in which attending the AACN Annual Meeting would represent a financial hardship for you without this award.

As a current trainee myself, I have benefited as I’ve  learned from amazing mentors along my educational journey. Having been a mentor myself, in both formal and informal settings, allows me to share my experiences with those who are interested in pursuing the next step in their educational/career journey. My experiences as a mentor includes being on various dissertation and interview panels, being a mentor for first year graduate students, and meeting with students who love to learn about neuropsychology and the steps involved in pursuing a career in neuropsychology. I could offer students my advice on graduate school, dissertation, internship, and post doc applications. I can provide students with what I have learned along the way, as well as a safe space to ask questions and gain insight into what it’s really like to go through all the schooling and training. If I were to be provided with the travel scholarship, I would be able to afford attending the conference. Without the scholarship, I don’t foresee myself being financially capable of purchasing a flight from Philadelphia to Chicago, especially as I support myself as a pre-doctoral intern. I would be honored to be provided with a stipend to attend.
