In 500 words or fewer, please describe (1) your prior mentorship experience and what you feel you can offer mentees from historically underrepresented backgrounds at the AACN annual meeting, and (2) how this mentorship experience will contribute to your professional goals. You also may describe the ways in which attending the AACN Annual Meeting would represent a financial hardship for you without this award. | My mentorship experience began as an undergraduate when I became an ambassador for the College of Science and Mathematics at North Dakota State University. As an ambassador, I met with prospective students and/or their parents to share my experiences, provide advice, or facilitate proper connections within the department. As a graduate student at the University of Utah, I have continued my involvement in mentorship via the diversity graduate student application advisory (DGSAA), which helps undergraduate students from historically underrepresented backgrounds with the graduate school application process—from searching for programs and finding prospective mentors, to writing essays, and interviewing. I can offer mentees the prospective of a female, first-generation college student from the rural Midwest who has paved her way to a clinical psychology PhD program. I can offer them the advice I wish I had applying for and going into graduate school, such as experiences to prioritize ahead of the application process, how to find programs that adhere to Division 40 guidelines, or how to choose an academic advisor. Over the years, I have become an extremely passionate mentor, and I strive to continue mentoring students in my career, whether it be undergraduate students or graduate students in research or clinical contexts. I find great reward in sharing my experiences to help others succeed and I love the fact that I also learn from each of my mentees. Unfortunately, without an award to cover the cost of boarding, I will not be able to attend AACN. I was fortunate to be able to attend the 2024 conference in Scottsdale, AZ, because of a free boarding opportunity. I thoroughly enjoyed the conference and would love to be able to attend for a second year and to be able to contribute in a meaningful way by mentoring students. Thank you for considering my application.
Sincerely, Allie Geiger |
