Personal Statement | It is with great enthusiasm that I submit my application for an AACN Conference Student/Trainee Co-leader position. My passion for leadership, student mentorship, training, and program development, is longstanding as it is a goal of mine to be a training director, supervisor, and hold leadership and committee positions in my professional career. As a first-generation graduate student and healthcare professional from a rural area, I understand the need for access to networking, quality resources, support, and information about education and various career paths in underrepresented populations. I have been fortunate to have had exposure a variety of supervisory and leadership styles throughout my training thus far, which have informed my own orientation and brought to surface areas of growth and support needed for budding neuropsychologists. In relation to the mission of AACN, I believe support and collaboration with attendees and trainees at the conference level, boosts the morale of students, training faculty, and staff and improves the quality of the field of neuropsychology. My affinity for program advancement and leadership stems from experiences in childhood where I helped with my family’s small business, volunteer efforts in my hometown business bureau and ethnic groups, programs for brain health awareness in low SES communities in Philadelphia, development of the first mental health initiative at my undergraduate institution, which is still in effect today, peer mentorship, and being a national member of the VA Psychology Training Council Administrative Committee. Challenges can arise in leadership positions such as different opinions on approaches to solutions, managing multiple high priority items at one time, and on the spot decision making. AACN's mission boasts advancing the profession of Clinical Neuropsychology through advocacy and education. I will channel the mission of AACN along with my personal and professional vocations to address obstacles within the role through leaning into difficult conversations, communication with peers, and consultation with higher-positioned AACN members when needed. My grittiness and perseverance to problem solve, even in areas unfamiliar to me, resilience in addressing barriers, and my kind and collaborative nature translate well, to be a positive and respectful student conference co-leader. |
