Please provide a paragraph describing an example of your commitment to service. | As a 4th-year neuropsychology student at Widener University, my commitment to service is exemplified through my involvement in the "Buddy Program." By formally and informally connecting with students from junior cohorts, I have helped them transition into the program, navigate challenges, and access valuable resources such as notes and study guides. Additionally, as an APA Division 54 campus representative, I dedicated time to increasing awareness of pediatric psychology among undergraduate students, fostering interest in the field, and encouraging future engagement in this critical area of psychology. Lastly, though not academically related, I have recently joined a local organization, For Goodness Cakes, and bake birthday cakes and other goods for under-resourced children and families. These experiences reflect my dedication to supporting others (within and outside of the academic/professional realms). |
Please provide a paragraph describing an example of your ability to persevere or achieve despite barriers. | An example of my perseverance is reflected in my journey through a childhood marked by instability, financial hardship, and emotional turmoil. Growing up, I navigated homelessness, frequent relocations, and the challenges of living in environments that were often unsafe and unpredictable. These hardships deeply affected my social development and self-esteem, yet I continued to push forward. The upheaval of moving between parents, states, and schools added to the complexity of my experiences, forcing me to adapt to new environments and overcome feelings of isolation and cultural displacement. Despite these barriers, I excelled academically, discovered my passion for psychology, and found meaning in understanding how my struggles shaped my resilience and empathy. My journey has not only taught me perseverance but also inspired me to pursue a career in clinical neuropsychology, where I can use my insights and training to support others facing their own physical and cognitive challenges. |
Please provide a paragraph discussing the potential benefits of your conference attendance to you and the professional community. | Attending this year's AACN conference offers invaluable benefits to both my personal and professional development as well as to the broader professional community. For me, being a part of this conference provides an opportunity to expand my knowledge by engaging with the latest research and clinical practices, fostering a richer understanding of evolving trends in neuropsychology beyond my classroom and training site. It would also allow me to network with seasoned professionals and peers, creating opportunities for vital collaboration. For the professional community, my attendance enhances knowledge-sharing, as I plan to share insights and resources gained from the conference with colleagues, supervisors and the like. Further, my inclusion in the 2025 AACN conference as a black female neuropsychology trainee increases representation and diversity, which benefits our field. |
Application for Conference Mentor Award | |
In 500 words or fewer, please describe (1) your prior mentorship experience and what you feel you can offer mentees from historically underrepresented backgrounds at the AACN annual meeting, and (2) how this mentorship experience will contribute to your professional goals. You also may describe the ways in which attending the AACN Annual Meeting would represent a financial hardship for you without this award. | My prior mentorship experience has been rooted in fostering inclusivity and support for those navigating complex academic and professional environments. As a participant in Widener University’s “Buddy Program,” I have formally and informally mentored junior cohort students, guiding them through the challenges of transitioning into the neuropsychology program, navigating academic hurdles, and accessing valuable resources. This role has honed my ability to provide tailored support, encouragement, and resources to individuals from varying walks of life and stages of training. At the AACN Annual Meeting, I believe I can offer mentees from historically underrepresented backgrounds a space to feel seen, valued, and understood. As a Black woman attending a predominantly white institution for my graduate training, I understand how important it is to be connected with professionals who share your identity. My lived experiences, combined with my academic training, equip me to assist mentees in navigating what can be an isolating space. As a mentee of a Black female neuropsychologist, I hope to one day work with current and/or prospective neuropsychology trainees in a similarly impactful manner. Participating in a mentoring role at the AACN Annual Meeting allows me to contribute to the profession by encouraging the inclusion and advancement of underrepresented voices, thereby promoting equity within the neuropsychology field. Regarding financial constraints, my ability to attend and fully participate in the conference would be jeopardized without this award. As a minority graduate student with limited income, the cost of registration, travel, and lodging for the AACN Annual Meeting would represent a significant financial burden at this time. Receiving this support would enable me to access invaluable learning and networking opportunities that would otherwise be out of reach, furthering my growth and ability to contribute meaningfully to the professional community. |
